Welcome the wacky world of customer service when you never know who you are going to be talking too. Ive only manned the phone for a week now but already Ive met a handful of interesting charactors.
For the most part, the people I have the privledge of providing service for are retired. Not all of them but a lot of them. Often times the gentlemen remind me of my own hard working grandfathers. However, Ive had a fair share of wives calling on behalf of thier deaf husbands but they have little knowledge of the issue they are calling in for. They tend to like to chat about thier dogs (one had 9!) and the weather.
In one instance, I was confirming an email address and the ol fella let out a holler of yahooooooooooooo!!! dot com. Like the old commercials. It sort of startled me but his enthusiasm was infectious.
The most fascinating call that came in this week was from a gentleman in San Bernardino. He spent a good 15 minutes discussing how terrible the Ca government was and how he is watching them dump into the ocean all the recent rain water collection from the reservoirs. He then turned his attention to his machine needs. In the end he told me he was going to come to Vermont and take me out to pancakes with maple syrup.
The customers are not the only funny people Im interacting with. My coworkers can be a hoot as well. One often looks out the window and comments about the weather based on the appearance of the weather rock located just outside. If its wet its raining sort of thing. Another shows up everyday with a fun fact .. like "Lake Champlain is considered one of the great lakes.. except its only mediocre". And today I heard a conversation going on that was descussing how a Mavrick was never a muscle car. Who talks about Mavricks in this day and age?
Anyway, there is always something going on here that makes me chuckle. I get paid to be entertained!
